Helensburgh butcher snags gong
Kevin Grant stands proud in the Helensburgh meat market. He’s used to customers checking out his ingredients, pointing and prodding and questioning his freshness.
So sure is he of his credentials that he recently put his snag on the line, letting the judges in the NSW Sausage King competition savour his sweet chilli and red bell pepper sausages.
And they were impressed.
For the second year in a row, Kevin’s snag has been crowned the Illawarra’s best gourmet sausage by the Australian Meat Industry Council. His win earned him a stab at the state titles where Kevin’s spicy snag won equal third.
“The competition was a lot stronger than previous years with more entrants,” said the veteran butcher who has been slicing and dicing for 45 years. “Some combinations were a bit strange but I just stick to my own recipe,” he said, adding that flavours were a matter of trial and error.
