Say ‘cheese’ ... you’re busted!!

Police say they expect to shortly lay charges in relation to a recent alleged shocking 'reprisal' attack by graffiti vandals which is believed to be linked to a recent brawl between two sporting clubs on the NSW Central Coast. The postcodes used in the attack referred to Helensburgh and Toukley.
Police said there were 23 cases of malicious damage, including Helensburgh Pool, the Community Hall, Helensburgh Community preschool, Rex Jackson Park facilities and Charles Harper Park, including the rotunda and gates to park. The vandalism occurred in the early hours of the morning and the repair bill is estimated to be up to a hundred thousand dollars, depending on the affected surfaces.
Wollongong Police Chief Inspector Ken McDonald said CCTV footage had recorded some of the vandalism and the footage had been sent for inspection by police on the Central Coast. He said Police were confident of an arrest. Local business people say the CTV video security system installed by the new House retail business has been instrumental in helping to identify those responsible for the damage.
Although the town has experienced an on-going problem with graffiti vandalism, shopkeepers and residents were astounded when confronted with the kilometres of graffiti damage on businesses, heritage buildings, cars and houses, mainly in Parkes and Walker Streets. Helensburgh Beautification Project co-ordinator Scott Smith said he was greatly upset by the damage, especially given the four years of work by volunteers to upgrade the town centre.
Wollongong City Council responded immediately to the graffiti mess, initiating an immediate clean up of Council assets and distributing clean up kits to residents and business owners.
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Alex Darling, expressed his disappointment in the senseless graffiti attacks, and said it was imperative Council work closely with residents and the police to let offenders know this type of anti social behaviour was not accepted in our community.
