Time to stop the rot
By Michelle Neathercote
“Helensburgh, wake up before its too late and the town gets devoured by the same problems with violence, vandalism, graffiti, alcohol and drug abuse that afflict other not-so-lucky communities.”
This is the message that Local Police and concerned business owners and residents are wanting to get out to the community following a series of criminal incidents, including an alleged violent attack on a Director of the Helensburgh Workers Club that took place recently.
“There is a lot of outrage in the community that this could happen in broad daylight just off the main street,” said the Convenor of the Local Area Meetings, Pauline Smith.
“If the individuals responsible don’t realise they need help, then whoever knows these offenders should come forward to seek help for them.
“Next time it could be your relative, friend or neighbour who is a victim and as a community we need to work together to do something about it.”
Police said they were disappointed that there are apparently many witnesses but no one would provide a statement in relation to it. Police are now appealing for any witnesses who may have information in relation to the assault to come forward.
“We need this type of help from the community to ensure justice is served so any help would be appreciated,” said a Police spokesperson.
A former Workers Club Director, Bob Goodwin said Helensburgh needs greater Police presence to help cope with the demands that will be placed on the town as it grows.
“Talking to people at the club, it is clear that people are very worried about the safety of their families because of increasing criminal and anti-social behaviours. People need to report these incidents and start putting more pressure on our local State Member for Parliament, Paul McLeay to respond to this growing concern.”
Police will address the community on this and other concerning issues at the next Local Area Meeting at the Helensburgh Community Centre at 7.30pm on Wednesday 13th February.
